Fiddle

I play the fiddle also known as the violin.  Most people I know the differences between the violin and the fiddle.  It really is the same instrument, just a different style of playing.  At least that's how it is for me because I play both classical violin music and also a variety of fiddle styles.  I enjoyed bluegrass fiddle and played in bluegrass bands in the Midwest primarily in Iowa.  Much of my repertoire is regarded as old-time fiddle music including waltzes, hoedowns, reels, jigs, hornpipes, rags and schottisches.  I also enjoy competition fiddle styles including the Texas Swing, Canadian and New England styles.

My favorite fiddle music is twin fiddle because of the beautiful harmonies and additional syncopation they can be accomplished with two fiddlers.  Regardless of what styles or tunes are played, what really makes playing fiddle fun is having a great piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass fiddle ensemble to perform with in order to complete all of the wonderful rhythms and harmonies that create the irresistible foot tapping energetic music commonly recognized as “fiddle”.  I use the exact same instrument to play my classical music.  Without any modification to the strings or bridge or bow I perform sacred music, classical, or fiddle.

One of my most exciting accomplishments was recently completing a musical CD with my friend C.F. Sirmans.  We are working on our next CD.  Meanwhile, if you don't yet own a copy of “Hilke-Sirmans STANDARDS” you really ought to order your copy today.   Here's a few "notes" regarding my music that may be of interest to you:
