      • Mike WalchMike Walch is a Stanford Law School graduate, practicing corporate law attorney, Hebrew scholar, Bible scholar, and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mike frequently provides insightful firesides focused on ancient and modern scripture with special insights on archeology, original Hebrew language, historical settings and customs, rhetorical devices in ancient writings such as Chiasms, and modern-day insights based on available artifacts and evidences. And, most importantly to me, Mike is one of my good friends.
      • Wayne MayWayne May is an author, lecturer, and publisher best known for his work on North American archaeology as it relates to the Book of Mormon. He is a prominent advocate of the “Heartland model,” a theory suggesting that the historical events recorded in the Book of Mormon took place in the heartland of North America rather than Central or South America.

The Book of Mormon

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is a sacred religious text of the Latter Day Saint movement, published in 1830 by Joseph Smith. [1]
Origins and Publication
  • Author/Translator: Joseph Smith stated he translated the text from golden plates written in an ancient language by ancient American prophets.

  • The Editor: A prophet-historian named Mormon abridged the historical records onto metal plates, and his son, Moroni, buried them around 400 CE.

  • Discovery: In 1823, Moroni is said to have appeared as an angel to Joseph Smith, guiding him to the buried plates in New York.

  • Publication Date: First published in March 1830 in Palmyra, New York. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Content and Narrative

  • Main Purpose: It is viewed as “Another Testament of Jesus Christ” that works alongside the Bible to teach the gospel. [1, 2, 3]

  • Civilizations: It details the history of two major groups in ancient America:
      • The Jaredites: Arrived much earlier from the Tower of Babel.
      • The Nephites and Lamanites: Descendants of an Israelite family (led by the prophet Lehi) that left Jerusalem around 600 BCE. [1, 2, 3]

  • Central Event: The climax of the book is the post-resurrection visit and personal ministry of Jesus Christ to the ancient inhabitants in the Americas. [1, 2, 3]

Role in the Church

  • Doctrinal Status: It is considered foundational scripture and the “keystone” of religion for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Online Access: You can read the full text directly on the Official Church Scriptures Page. [1, 2]
